Cyprus

My country, Cyprus, is an island in the north eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea.

Its area is 9251 sq.km, the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia.
Mount Olympos on the Troodos mountain range in the southwest is the highest point at 1953 metres. The Pentadactylos mountain range is in the north, and the Mesaoria plain in the centre of the island.

Winters are mild with daytime temperatures not lower 10 degrees Centigrade. Winters are wet but not as wet as they should be! Summers are dry and hot going as high as 40 degrees Centigrade.

Cyprus has a population of 750.000, 85% of which are Greek Cypriots, and 12% Turkish Cypriots.

The capital is Lefkosia (Nicosia) with a population of 185.000, located in the central plain. Other cities are Lemesos (Limassol, 145.000 population), Larnaka (60.000) and Pafos (32.000). Kyrenia and Famagusta are occupied by the Turkish armed forces since July 1974. The latter is now a deserted ghost town.

The currency is the Cyprus Pound which is roughly equivalent to USD 2,00 (April 1997).
The per capita income in Cyprus is equivalent to USD 13.500.
